THE RIGHTS OF LEFTS
Which is your strong hand, right or left? Both? Are you sure? Can you say
the same orientation for you feet, ears, and eyes? As part of your personal
quest, discovering "who am I?" hopefully, something here will add to your
experiences.
TESTS ("hand orientation")
CIRCLES Using one hand then another, draw a
series of X's then draw circles around them. If you draw the circles
counterclockwise you could be left-handed.(These are generalized tests. Some
lefties are very comfortable with drawing clockwise circles and some righties
are quick to draw counterclockwise. )
THUMBNAILS Compare your thumbnails, check their
bases and determine which (if any) is wider and squarer at its base. That
thumb is suppose to represent the your strong hand, if right- you're
right-handed, if left- you're left-handed.
PROFILE Draw the profile of a face (human or
whatever just a face profile) When you are done, which way is the face facing?
Left suggests left-handed and right, right-handed.
OTHER TASKS Other then handwriting, which hand
do you use to: comb your hair (some use both), play golf, pet animal, drive
screws, use computer 'mouse', pour liquids, brush teeth, deal cards, hammer,
toss a ball, sketch, etc? Sometimes, penmanship orientation is a forced
right-hand experience, particularly if you do so many other tasks with your
left hand. It's interesting to note that there is also a "strong-ear,
strong-eye, strong-foot" as well!
SHOELACES Tie your shoes. Is the left lace on
top of the right lace with the first loop forming on the right? If so, you
could be a leftie.
HELP THE EXPERTS:
Indiana Universite has a survey, takes 10 minutes, but is very insiteful!!_
HAND Preference test_ The site is also excellent for
parents, teachers, politicians, and employers!
Famous left-handers:
Dave's a lefty and so
is: Oprah, General Norman Schwarzkopf, Paul Williams, Peter Benchley, Robert
DeNiro, Shirley MacLaine, George Bush, Ross Perot, President Bill Clinton,
Larry Bird, Reggie Jackson, Pele, Martina Navratilova, Jimmy Connors, John
McEnroe, Gerald Ford, Forrest Sawyer, Marcia Clark, Ted Koppel, Billy Graham,
Phil Collins, Paul McCartney, George Michael, Whoopi Goldberg, Jay Leno, Carol
Burnett, Richard Dreyfuss, Robert Redford, Bruce Willis, Bruce Jenner.
Left-handers from the past: Ben
Franklin, Albert Schweitzer, Helen Keller, Joan of Arc, Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig,
Leonardo da Vinci, Harpo Marx, Julius Caesar, Sergei Rachminoff, Jimi Hendrix,
Mark Twain, Lewis Carroll, Harry S. Truman, Nelson Rockefeller, Napolean, Jim
Henson, Michael Landon, Danny Kaye, Steve McQueen, Judy Garland
Left-handed folks, or Southpaws, are extra-challenged by a right-handed
society. Think of an office desk. Where are the drawers? What hand uses a
scissors, pencil sharpener, spiral notebook? Ever hear of a left-hand power
tool?

LEFTIE ADVANTAGES
NATURAL JUGGLERS Between hemispheres of the brain,is a nerve
network region called the corpus callosum. It is responsible for
coordinating signals between the two brain sections, and in left-handed folks
it is about 10% larger!!
CAPABLE OF PERFORMING TWO SEPARATE TASK WITH BOTH HANDS AT THE SAME
TIME. Jotdown notes and sip coffee? Smooth your tummy in circles with one
hand, while patting your head with the other. Can you keep two tasks
distinctive while performing at same time? Of course, now "Mom's" can do that
left-handed or not! But, that's among the many benefits of being a
woman-being! BTW, Women's garments dress with left-handed orientation
(buttons). In days of old, fashionable women were dressed, so buttons remained
left-handed!
STRONG VISUAL MEMORY Lefties tend to know "the face" before "the
name". This is crucial in understanding 'how to educate'. Two plus two equals
four more readilly if 2 apples were presented with 2 more apples and question
is, "How many do you see?"
SPACIAL ORIENTATION Spacial orientation is a left-hander's strong
point, terrific puzzle players, who know 'this piece fits there', yet the
piece is still in the air waiting to be placed.
ADAPT FASTER If a lefty needed to use their other hand or leg due
to accident/injury/whatever, he/she would be better able to adapt to using
their weaker side, faster than a righthanded person. Consider the use of
righthanded items like: notebooks, automobiles, powertools, scissors, ice
cream scoopers?
READ/WRITE UPSIDE-DOWN and BACKWARDS VERY WELL!!! Lefties do it
almost as easy as upside-up and forwards. Consider a desk with a client on the
opposite side. A lefty could read shared forms facing him/her or the client,
proficiently!!
STRONG INTUITION! Do you know the answer before finishing a math
problem? (Einstein could have been a lefty.) Intuition, knowing the answer
without the muttle of reasoning to it, is a leftie strong point, function
residing in the right hemisphere of the brain
STRONG EAR! Lefties know the tune faster than right-handers...but
lyrics are a right-hander's strongpoint!
